I don’t remember the first time I heard about jackfruit, but it was only within the past couple of years. The first time I bought any jackfruit was a couple years ago at Whole Foods. I saw the Upton pre-mixed jackfruit, and decided to try out the barbecue-flavored jackfruit. Let me tell you, I was impressed. I occasionally bought jackfruit after that, but I usually only got it as a treat.

More recently, with the rise in popularity of jackfruit, I’ve been more curious about making my own jackfruit recipes from scratch. The one issue I’ve had is that I can never find any canned jackfruit in any stores. I was finally able to find some at Trader Joe’s. I literally find everything I need there. I am so glad I moved close to one last year. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I ever move away from one. But you can always buy canned jackfruit online. I just never like ordering food online unless I have to (like all my low-protein foods).

Preparing the jackfruit doesn’t take too much effort. The most effort goes into shredding the jackfruit into the right consistency. I tend to use two forks to pull the jackfruit apart more easily. Once you shred all of the jackfruit, you just need to add the seasonings and sauce. Pretty simple! Once it’s all mixed, let it chill in the fridge for at least an hour.

After it’s been in the fridge, you can use it to make all sorts of recipes. I usually just use it to make a “sloppy joe” style sandwich, and pair it with a pickle or some fries. I’ve tried adding it to a rice bowl, but I haven’t quite found the right combination of flavors yet. It’s also pretty good as a taco filling as well. There are so many ways to use jackfruit!
